Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych spoke this week about the country’s efforts to increase alternative sources of gas supply to counteract what it sees as an expensive contract with Russia. In trying to achieve a price that is more in line with the average price in Europe, Yanoukovych claims that Ukraine has not received any support or assistance from the West. Part of its efforts have included increasing domestic production; in 2011, coal production increased significantly.
