Croatia ratification of EU accession treaty sets an important example for Balkans

Following a referendum last weekend, Croatian citizens voted to join to the European Union, thus ratifying the accession treaty. Croatia became an EU candidate country in 2005. Its accession talks ended back in June of 2011 when the EU Commissioners for Enlargement and Foreign Affairs determined Croatia had managed to meet performance benchmarks the EU had set for it. Croatia signed the EU accession treaty in September of 2011. Once current EU member states also ratify the treaty, the European Union’s 28th member will officially become a member on July 1st, 2013.
