Following protests and mounting tensions between the Government and the military, Maldivian president Mohamed Nasheed, the country’s first democratic president, announced his resignation. The recent protests were sparked when Nasheed ordered the arrest of a senior judge on charges of misconduct and favoring opposition figures.
